In the drive toward sustainability, managing and verifying energy performance data is a critical challenge. Buildings and neighbourhoods are under increasing pressure to meet stringent environmental standards while ensuring transparency and accountability in their operations. Traditional systems often fall short due to vulnerabilities in data integrity, inefficient reporting mechanisms, and limited scalability. Blockchain technology offers a transformative solution by enabling secure, tamper-proof record-keeping and automated compliance verification. This approach not only improves trust among stakeholders but also streamlines the processes needed to achieve and demonstrate sustainability goals.

The Trusted Digital Building Logbook (Trusted DBL) is a blockchain-enabled platform developed within the PROBONO project by Konnecta & INLECOM to address these challenges. It provides a decentralised and reliable system for managing energy-related data, such as consumption, emissions, and efficiency metrics, at both the building and neighbourhood levels. By using blockchain, the logbook ensures that all recorded data is immutable, providing an unalterable history that stakeholders can trust.
Central to the Trusted DBL is the integration of smart contracts. These programmable agreements automatically execute actions when predefined criteria are met. For example, when a building achieves specific energy efficiency targets, the system generates non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as verifiable proof of compliance. These tokens simplify regulatory reporting and create an auditable trail of achievements.
Technical Features and Benefits
Data Integrity and Security: Blockchain technology guarantees the authenticity and immutability of energy performance data, mitigating risks associated with manual data handling and manipulation.
Automation Through Smart Contracts: Predefined energy efficiency criteria are embedded in smart contracts, automating verification processes and reducing administrative overhead.
Simplified Regulatory Compliance: NFTs generated by the system provide quick and reliable proof of compliance, easing the reporting process for regulatory bodies.
While its initial application is in energy performance management, the Trusted DBL's architecture can be extended to other sectors requiring secure and transparent data management. For instance, it could be used in supply chain management to verify product certifications or in healthcare to manage compliance across multiple facilities. Its modular design ensures scalability, making it adaptable to various use cases.
Currently in its pilot phase, the Trusted DBL supports secure data storage and token generation for compliance reporting, in the context of the PROBONO project Living Labs. Future updates will focus on integrating the platform with digital twin models, enabling real-time device automation based on performance thresholds. This evolution will enhance its capability to dynamically manage energy systems, making it a key component of the PROBONO project's vision for sustainable urban development.
By combining blockchain technology with automation, the Trusted DBL addresses a pressing need for secure and efficient energy management systems. Its innovative approach not only advances the PROBONO project but also sets a benchmark for transparency and trust in sustainability initiatives.
